This new structure is intended to expand the available communal areas for the residents. It will offer a versatile space for quiet reflection, social gatherings, and various activities, enhancing the quality of life for the young adults living there.
Els Roberts, a trustee at the PALS Trust, explained the importance of the project. "Currently we are raising funds for a garden room to be built at the back of the building, giving much-needed extra space for the young people to enjoy some quiet time or even socialise together," she said.

Supporting Independent Living in Bromborough
The PALS Trust plays a vital role in the local community by supporting 16 young adults with disabilities. The charity's primary mission is to empower these individuals to live as independently as possible within a supportive environment.
The residents live in specially adapted flats located in the Candle Factory building in Bromborough. Since moving into the building in 2020, the residents and the trust have been actively fundraising to improve the shared facilities and introduce more communal activities.
Ongoing Fundraising Efforts
Since 2020, residents at the Candle Factory have successfully raised funds for several key additions to their communal spaces. These include greenhouses for growing fruit and vegetables and a pool table, all aimed at fostering community and providing engaging activities.
Paul Carhart, chief executive of Wirral Methodist Housing Association, which works with the trust, praised the residents' initiative. "The tenants at the Candle Factory moved into the building in 2020 and have been fund raising since then to provide more activities in the communal spaces," he confirmed.
Carhart highlighted previous successes, noting the addition of "a couple of greenhouses to grown fruit and veg and a pool table." He added, "We as a Housing Association are really pleased to see the amount of work the group do and are very supportive towards their goals."
Corporate Support for a Local Cause
The donation from Persimmon Homes North West is part of the company's established Community Champions programme. This initiative is designed to provide financial support to charities and community groups in the areas where the company operates.
Persimmon's Community Champions
Persimmon's Community Champions initiative is a national programme that donates up to £64,000 every month to good causes across the UK. Two organisations in each of its 32 operating areas can receive up to £1,000 each. The PALS Trust received a larger, specified grant as part of this commitment.
David Hodgson, sales director for Persimmon Homes North West, commented on the decision to support the Bromborough charity. He emphasised the company's commitment to investing in the local communities where it builds new homes.
"Given our presence in the Wirral, we are always looking to support local good causes, and I am delighted we could donate to the PALS Trust," stated Hodgson. This contribution directly aligns with the programme's goal of making a positive impact on local life.
Enhancing Community Life for Residents
The planned garden room represents more than just an additional structure; it is a significant step towards creating a more dynamic and supportive living environment for the PALS Trust residents.
The project is the latest in a series of improvements driven by the residents themselves. Their continuous fundraising efforts demonstrate a strong desire to build a vibrant community within the Candle Factory building. The new space will provide a dedicated area away from their private flats where they can interact, learn new skills, or simply relax.
The support from organisations like Persimmon Homes and the Wirral Methodist Housing Association is crucial in helping the trust achieve its objectives. By providing essential funding and encouragement, these partners enable the PALS Trust to continue its valuable work in promoting independence and wellbeing for young adults with disabilities in the Wirral.
